Doug McCann Biography

Born on April 28, 1958, raised in the Sudbury area, Doug graduated from grade 13 at Sudbury Secondary School 1977. He attended Cambrian College with the intention of studying Business Administration, but after a year he decided it was not what he wanted to do and continued with his career in radio broadcasting at CKSO AM and FM, Sudbury. This line of work additionally took him to Ottawa, Orillia and Peterborough, but also to Parry Sound which has become home for 42 years.

Doug owned and operated a record store in the Parry Sound Mall in the early 1980s and ran a successful mobile disc jockey business for 16 years.

He founded McCann & Cambrian E-Media Services in 1997 offering voice services and audio and video production, web design and hosting, computer consulting, broadcast radio production services, and recently Parry Sound Eastern Shores Online Radio at ParrySoundRadio.com.

One of Doug’s favourite passions was his involvement with Big Brothers in Parry Sound for over 20 years. He served in several capacities including President of the local organization. Most rewarding was spending time as a Big Brother!

Doug was Chair of the Parry Sound Victory School Commemorative Project celebrating Victory School following its closing in 2015. The project included the production of a commemorative book and a 4-DVD set.

As a 2017 fund raiser for Belvedere Heights, Doug headed a project in collaboration with area photographers and produced the Parry Sound Area Digital Showcase, a 2-DVD set for computer and television.  The multimedia project was a culmination of 300 images, multimedia slideshows, screensavers, desktop wallpapers and prints.

Doug published a book, “The Story of the Birth of Broadcasting in Sudbury - Local Visionaries, Canadian Pioneers of Broadcasting” in print form last November and has recently released an ebook version.  The book serves as a historical resource of how early 20th-century mining led to the affluence of a city which spurred the birth and growth of print and electronic media. It celebrates the many Canadian firsts achieved by the Sudbury broadcast visionaries back in the first half of the 20th century.
